In a not-too-distant future, society is divided into five factions, each representing five completely different ways of life. Like all adolescents, Beatrice 'Tris' Prior must choose between factions. Her decision will determine her entire life, because the faction she joins will henceforth be considered her family. But the aptitude test, which is supposed to reveal Tris' inner calling, shows no clear result. She is a Divergent, meaning she possesses several conflicting aptitudes.
